My first year of college is already done! WOW how did this time go by this fast?!!!
Its been an amazing year and Iam completely satisfied with the choice of my college. I have met so many new friends and formed such a amazing group of friends.
Living in Dallas for a year is so different than living in California, but I actually enjoyed it. The only part that I disliked was the cold winter. I have decided that it would be a good idea to live in Dallas for a few years and work after I graduate. If i graduate from the Cox School of Business I think living in Dallas will allow me so many more oppurtunities and open so many doors for me.
It's actually making me so nervous that Iam growing up so fast! Soon enough I'am going to be living on my own, paying my own bills, and entering in the 'real world'. I don't really like it, but I guess we all have to do it one day...

What Corporate America Can't Build: A Sentence
After reading this article, I was shocked. It really surprises me that corporate America can't build a sentence. When you get a job out of college you are stepping into the real world. You should always be formal in your emails. I think I know what the problem is. When people write in emails, the program doesn't catch your mistakes; spelling, commas, capitalizations etc. I know this is the same for when I write blogs. I always write them in my word document and than copy and paste them to my blog. I think workers should write in a word document first. It will help lessen the mistakes. Today we are used to AIM language so we will throw in a "u" or "ur" or "wat". The list goes on.
Besides the spelling errors, the way people talk to their bosses is unacceptable. You should always speak formally to any one above you. It is just rude. In Japan you have different words when you speak to someone above you or below you. For example, " I will write this letter for you" can be said in two different ways; for someone above you, some one the same level as you, and some one below you. I guess they don’t have different words for different people so it is different, but being raised in a Japanese family with different formal words it really makes me mad when employees talk informally to their bosses. This would never be accepted in a Japanese culture.
I also think there is so much money being spent to re-teach employees how to write. It is just stupid. The reason why we go to college is to get a good education. Obviously we may not remember how to do calculus equations, but we should at least know how to build a proper sentence. Businesses should not have to pay to train their employees. Employees should come on to the job with a good education, knowing how to write.
This makes me nervous that people are noticing that employees don't know how to write. I have always wanted to be a broad caster on TV but the reason why I didn't do that is because I don't like to write. The reason why is that I don't think I’m a good writer. If I was a good writer I would love writing! Anyway my point is that I decided business would be a better major for me because I am really good at math. This way I thought I could avoid writing anything. But I guess there will always be writing in any type of job. I know I will be fine writing emails to other people but if some one tells me to write a paper, I wont be to happy. I hope my writing does not affect the job I get in the future!

freshman 15
m sure everyone has heard warnings about the "freshman 15". And I believe it is true that many college students gain 15 pounds in their first year of school. I know I have gained at least 7 pounds.
Before college the one thing I refused to do was to gain weight. I didn't think I would have a problem because I always had a fast metabolism. I ate what ever I wanted and never gained weight. But when I think back it was because I was eating my mom’s healthy home cooked meals for most of the week and I was working out at cheer practice 4 times a week.
One reason why college students gain weight is because the cafeteria. We are on our own and are free to eat what we want, when we want it. We can eat pizza, French fries, and ice cream every day of the week if we wanted to. I know for most students they come from families who cook dinners for them most nights of the week. Our parents don't make French fries or pizza for us every night, what they cook for us is healthy. Usually when we order pizza at home it is a treat. Or when we get French fries at McDonalds it's a treat. When we come to Umfree Lee we can eat whatever we want because we are allowed to.
The reason why I gained weight is mainly because of the cafeteria. I know its not from alcohol because I don't drink that much. First semester when I came to Umfree Lee I literally ate what ever I wanted. Burgers, fries, pizza, pasta, fried chicken etc. IT WAS SO GOOD, but not so healthy. If kids are free to eat whatever they want of course they are going to gain weight!
These unhealthy food choices we make doesn't give us the balance of nutrients we need. The weight gain could really affect our health (high cholesterol or high blood pressure).
It’s really not our fault that college students gain weight. I think it is mainly the cafeteria’s fault. Because they serve French fries and pizza every day of the week we are free to eat it every day of the week. I think Umfree Lee should have these unhealthy foods maybe only 3 times a week. The other days I think it should be all healthy. This way kids can control their weight better. Looking back I totally regret eating all that junk food, going to Umfree Lee now totally disgusts me!

i hate paying for gas!
I commented on A New Time to Start's blog about the rising prices on gas. Check it out...What Gas Prices?
Can cough medicine get you high?
Around a year ago today one of my friends passed away from an overdose of drugs. This wasn't an illegal drug. It was an over the counter cough medicine called Triple C. This is actually the slang term of Coricidin HBP Cough and Cold and it contains dextromethorphan. When dextromethorphan is taken more than is needed it produces hallucinations and a sense of dissociation or you feel “f-d upped”. You feel the effects similar to those experienced with PCP (phencyclidine) or ketamine. You also feel the effect for up to six hours. When this medicine is taken normally it actually treats your colds and allergies.
The first time I heard about Triple C was the summer before my junior year. Some of my guy friends heard about it and were interested so they started stealing them at drug stores. They would take around 10- 12 pills at a time and about an hour later feel the effect. Everytime they would take it, they would take more. If they took 12 before they would take 14 the next time. I never tried it because I though it was stupid getting “f-d upped” over a cough medicine but it seemed to work and they had a great time. My guy friends started stealing more and more from any grocery store they could go to and started selling them to kids. It was so dangerous. Finally they got over it and stopped doing it.
The next time I heard about some one doing triple C was when a friend of mine over-dosed on it and died. Every one was shocked, especially my guy friends because they have abused it before. She actually ended up taking 21. She heard that it was fun from some friends so decided to start taking triple c and loved it. She bought it from drug stores. Can you believe some one died from cough medicine? It was shock for everyone and it was so sad because so many people have tried it before.
It’s amazing that a drug this powerful can be bought at a grocery store. Now I heard most stores sell Triple C behind the counter because so many people abuse it. But you can still get it without a prescription, which I think should change. I don't know how many people have died from it but if a drug like this, that is so cheap and can be found easily, is available to anyone you never know what people will do with it. Taking high doses of this medicine could really affect one’s future. I know this medicine works for colds and allergies but I think it should definitely be behind the counter and you should have a prescription to buy it.

no one lives on campus their sophmore year...
These past two months my two roommates and I have been looking for a place to live on campus. It was has been a disaster but we finally found the perfect house. The first house we wanted didn’t sell to college students, than the second house we wanted decided to only sell and so forth. We finally found our perfect apartment and we are so excited to move in.
Although we found a perfect place I believe it is overpriced… especially for college students. So I asked my friends from home what they thought and none of them are even getting apartments they are all still living on campus! I thought to myself wow at our school it is rare for upperclassmen to live on campus, only if your living in your sorority or fraternity. Anyway I thought I really wouldn't mind living on campus if everyone else was doing it. I feel like Iam so spoiled for having my parents pay for a super nice apartment in Highland Park! I also don't think I’am ready to have my own place, it seems so much more “grown up” and more “the real world”. After I get out of college I have the rest of my life to have my own apartment and be “grown up”. I really don't think I’am ready to look at the bills every month for utilities and everything else.
I really don't think it is a bad idea to make sophomores live on campus, because I know many girls that think if everyone else was doing it they wouldn't mind doing it. It would save our parents a lot of money and we just get to experience our college dorm life longer. I love the dorms I think it is so fun! I feel like coming back to my apartment sometimes may be lonely. I’m still really excited to move into my apartment… but I think it's a good idea to make sophomores live on campus. Maybe the school should make dorms especially for sophomores? Just a thought.

asian kids... too much pressure?
Claim: Asian parents need to stop pressuring their kids so much.
Reason: Asian kids are more likely to commit suicide than American kids because of the pressure from their parents
Evidence: Chronicle Online takes a survey of students who have committed suicide at Cornell and most are Asian students.
Reason: Asian kids may end up in a job or future that they do not like.
Evidence: From personal observations asian students are expected to excel in their college courses and major in a subject their parents see as respectable. For example, majoring in medicine, engineering, or sciences.
Reason: Asian kids have lower self-esteem because their goals are set so high
Evidence: An article by Andrew Lam talks about a Korean rock star who rates himself lower than what others think he is.
Reason: Asian parents pressure kids to stay close to the family and as a result they dont know what to do when they get to college and they get all this freedom.
Evidence: From experience asian dads are normally very strict on their kids. College is for many asian students the first time they've spend significant time away from home. So when they get to college Asian students are exposed to new experiences.

the perfect spring break body
So spring break is coming up meaning you are in a bikini showing your body off to tons of people! When this time comes around girls are hitting the gym to try to better there body and it is true! Whenever I go to the gym I see so many girls working out so they can have a HOT BODY for spring break. Working out and eating right are some ways girls are trying to lose weight but others take losing weight to a new level by hurting their bodies.
Binge eating, not eating, throwing up etc. These are all common things girls are doing to better themselves and it has become an issue worldwide. Today, the pressure to become skinny is everywhere. Body image has become a big deal on college campuses especially right before spring break. Girls want to have the best body and show it off.
The one main cause of anorexia and bulimia is low self-esteem. Girls feel that they aren’t good enough, or pretty enough and that their lives would get better if they could just lose weight. It’s so sad when you see a beautiful girl hurt their body so they can feel better about themselves… this feeling good about yourself is only a short term happiness though.
One of my best friends in high school was on cheer with me as well as a flyer. She was the cutest smallest girl ever and for some reason she thought she wasn't good enough. She thought she was too heavy for the boys to lift her up in the air. She started to lose some weight, stopped eating meat, stopped eating carbs, and only ate vegetables and fruit. She did drastically lose weight. All her friends tried to help her but she didn't listen to anyone. Everyone at school started to notice and thought she was a freak. Her skin started to look bad, her hair started to fall out, she was basically a walking toothpick. Finally our cheer coach talked to her parents and she finally realized that she had a problem and went into therapy and now she’s back to normal but because she started to binge eat her metabolism slowed down which meant that she can gain weight easily. She has become a much bigger girl than before. It’s sad to see a naturally skinny girl with a fast metabolism mess up her metabolism by trying to better her body image.
Iam sure most people know at least one person that has had a eating disorder. Its so common. I really hate seeing girls that hurt their body just to make themselves feel better. The worst part is these girls don't realize they don't have a problem. I really just want to tell them that anorexia and bulimia will not work in the long run for losing weight! Your just going to gain it all back and its just going to mess your whole metabolism up! So just eat healthy ,work out ,feel good about your self ,accept your body and LOVE YOURSELF!!!

CHEERLEADING. REAL SPORT?
Yesterday I went to the NCA all star nationals cheerleading competition at the convention center it Dallas. It was so excitng especially because I have competed at the same place when i was a competitive cheerleader in high school. It brought back so many memories with the curlers, the hairspray, the bobby pins, the glitter, and the ribbons. It made me want to jump in one team and do the routine with them! I miss it so much!
What made me upset is that when we got back from the competition and told some guys we went to a cheer competition today they just laughed in our faces. It really makes me mad that people think that cheerleading isnt a real sport BECAUSE IT IS.
Cheerleading is one of the few sports that is year round so you barely get any breaks through out the year. Think about running and doing some flips, do a dance, lifting a girl up in the air and than do some more flips and throw a girl up in the air again for two minutes and thirty seconds. ITS A BIG WORK OUT! I feel that people underestimate cheerleading they think it is just a "ra ra" sport and we just go and cheer at games but its not true. We put so many hours in perfecting our tumbling skills and trying to balance a girl up in the air.
As the flyer i was always on top being thrown around. All the pressure was always one me because when your up in the air the judges always look at you. Its nerve racking because every body depends on you. And for some reason you fall in a stunt and even if it isnt your fault your teammates get mad at you. It sucks. Its a lot of pressure and its hard! As hard as it is for a guy to hold a girl up in the air its just as hard for a girl to balance her self on one leg in the air.
I just really want to ask guys that arent in cheer if they could balance a girl with one hand? Because thats what all guys have to do and in unison with the twelve other stunts going up. You only get one chance and if one person bends a knee in a stunt and falls you wont get first place. I just really want all the guys that play sports to just try cheerleading for a day and see how hard it actually is and it isnt a stupid sport. Yes there are teams out there that just cheer at games and arent competitive but the competitive teams that are out there are AWESOME! These people have practice probally 16 hours a week and its hard.
I just want people to appreciate cheerleaders more because it isnt a stupid sport. Its hardcore. Go to a cheer competiton and watch.

Chicka Chicka Yeah Fake I.D. Fake I.D.
When i hear the work fake i.d. it is so common. Mostly all the people i know own one. But it is SO ILLEGAL! Last week i went to a bar with my friend and the police walked to the bar and saw that my friend was wearing an SMU hat. The police walked straight up to him and asked if he was 21 because he was holding a beer. He denied it at first but after he looked at his i.d. he was taken outside. That night my friend went to jail for the night for public intoxication and he said it was one of the worst experiences of his life.
The law is that if you are caught purchasing or possessing any type of alcoholic beverages Violators of this section are guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor and, upon conviction, face a fine of at least $500 or fifty hours of community service, and can lose their driver's license for up to a year. My friend that night didnt lose his liscence but basically he has to pay a fine and to community service.
I dont really know what to say about this situation because so many people in college own fake i.d.s to get drinks and get into bars. Its more of a social thing and to think that it is actually really illegal makes me feel really bad about everyone i know that has one. But alot of the bars on greenville wouldnt get as much service if so many people didnt own fake i.d.s.
I mean i know its a bad thing to own one but when it comes to owning one when you want to go out and be social i feel that its okay.
In another case my wallet was stolen last year and some one used my credit card and liscence and spent over 200 dollars of things. My i.d. wasnt fake but they pretended it was me. This made me so mad and we could never find the person. I feel that when you use an i.d. and it is hurting some one else its bad but when you use a fake i.d. to try to get into a bar it isnt harming anyone else really. Your just trying to have fun.
Today it is so easy to get a fake i.d.s you can ask anyone on campus and they would know of one person that could get one to you. I heard of a story once that a person was working at the D.M.V and he went in one night and stole the hole machine that makes fake i.d.s. He started making them for alot of people and making LOTS OF MONEY. i dont know what happend to him or if he got caught but when i heard that i was so surprised! That is so risky!
But today it is so common to own a fake i.d. and sometimes if you do get caught the worst that happens is that it gets taken away. But if you get caught by the cops its s different story.
After what happened to my friend it made me realize that carrying a fake i.d. is actually really bad and illegal and you could get into some major trouble but its weird because its so common. I know having a fake i.d. will just get more and more common. Maybe the cops will bust the people that make them or maybe they wont. We will see.

I know having a fake i.d. will just get more and more common. Maybe the cops will bust the people that make them or maybe they wont. We will see.

RUMORS?
This weekend while i was out i heard rumors about some new recommendations for the campus.
SMU might build an on-campus pub and may allow frats to have parties in the houses with professional bartenders under one circumstance: they must hire police to monitor the parties.
This is quite interesting. I have not heard of a campus with a bar in it! I mean thats kinda cool? but i would feel really weird saying "hey tonight were going to the smu bar!" That is just weird. We are all so used to going to off campus bars. I would feel like I'am getting in trouble if I drink at the on-campus pub.
I'm not sure if it is a good thing or bad thing to have police in the houses. SMU is a dry campus but who listens to that? Every weekend people are pregaming in their dorm and in the frat houses and most of the time you can get away with it. I know my friends at other schools get suprised when I tell them SMU has parties at bars because most colleges with a greek system throw all their parties in the fraternity houses. I actually really like going off campus to different bars its a different scene and i definitely feel older going to bars.
Having police in the houses would definitely be safer for everyone but not as fun. I dont think we need professional bartenders in the house it is too much of a hastle waiting for drinks when you can just get one in any of the rooms of the frat. I could not imagine going into a frat house getting my i.d. checked and walking around the house with a wrist band or x's on your hand. Most of my friends have fake i.d's and it is pretty easy to get into bars with them but with the cops checking our i.d's they could be taken away pretty fast.
Having cops monitor parties would definitely make going out not as fun. I dont think it really matters though. I think that even if there are bartenders at the houses the frats would still throw parties at other bars. I wonder if this reccomendation will happen in the future. And if it does i wonder how it will change the SMU night life.

When I first heard we had to internet blogging I was not too excited, but after reading other peoples blogs it started to become a little more interesting. It is basically a diary or something to write your thoughts in. Its cool that the whole world could see what I'am writing and what I'am thinking about. Sometimes I'am shy around people and I dont like to say what Iam thinking because Im not comfortable. Blogging will be easier to get my feelings out when Iam to shy to tell other people. The thing that is annoying is that I dont think classmates will take the time to read other peoples blogs because they are lazy (speaking for my self). This is something I would of not done if it wasn't a class assignment so it will definitely be interesting. Blogging will help me think for my self and help me center my self. I hope my classmates and I can all get something out of blogging because it is definitely something new and interesting for most of us. Blogging will definitely set this english class apart from all the other english classes i have taken and I guess we will see if I like it or not....
