These past two months my two roommates and I have been looking for a place to live on campus. It was has been a disaster but we finally found the perfect house. The first house we wanted didn’t sell to college students, than the second house we wanted decided to only sell and so forth. We finally found our perfect apartment and we are so excited to move in.
Although we found a perfect place I believe it is overpriced… especially for college students. So I asked my friends from home what they thought and none of them are even getting apartments they are all still living on campus! I thought to myself wow at our school it is rare for upperclassmen to live on campus, only if your living in your sorority or fraternity. Anyway I thought I really wouldn't mind living on campus if everyone else was doing it. I feel like Iam so spoiled for having my parents pay for a super nice apartment in Highland Park! I also don't think I’am ready to have my own place, it seems so much more “grown up” and more “the real world”. After I get out of college I have the rest of my life to have my own apartment and be “grown up”. I really don't think I’am ready to look at the bills every month for utilities and everything else.
I really don't think it is a bad idea to make sophomores live on campus, because I know many girls that think if everyone else was doing it they wouldn't mind doing it. It would save our parents a lot of money and we just get to experience our college dorm life longer. I love the dorms I think it is so fun! I feel like coming back to my apartment sometimes may be lonely. I’m still really excited to move into my apartment… but I think it's a good idea to make sophomores live on campus. Maybe the school should make dorms especially for sophomores? Just a thought.

I agree with you. All of my friends from high school who go to different schools are living on campus next year. Their schools have a lot of opportunities for upperclassmen to live on campus. Like you, I found a place off campus to live. It was really hard to find a nice place that wasn't so overpriced. I went to sign up for on campus housing for next year just in case I couldn't find a place off campus, and the lady at RLSH basically laughed in my face. There is extremely limited on campus housing for upperclassmen if you aren't in fine arts or honors. Everything around campus is so expensive that its hard to find close off campus housing. My sister moved off campus her sophmore year at her college, and her rent is half of what mine is going to be! I think that SMU should realize that there is very limited off campus housing if you want to remain close and that not everyone can afford apartments in University or Highland Park. The school really needs to work on their on campus housing because its part of the college experience, and not everyone wants to or is ready to move off campus their second year in college. I am going to miss living in the dorms and always having someone to talk to in my suite or in my hall.
I totally agree with you. I have also loved dorm life this past year. Although I never thought I would want to stick with it another year, I am living in the dorms next year with several of my friends. We were all planning on finding an apartment or house around campus so we could all live together, but it was almost impossible. We had way too many girls to accommodate, the prices were outrageous, we needed something that was walking distance, and plus all those crazy Highland Park rules against more than two girls with the same last name living in one place were making it impossible to work out for us. So we decided that it would be alright if we all lived in the dorms together and that way we could still live together, and we would not have to worry about bills, food, safety, and all the other responsibilities involved with off campus housing. I heard that SMU is building new dorms and they are going to require all sophomores to live on campus. I think it is a great idea because like you said we have all the time in the world after college to get apartments and live on our own. This is only a four-year experience and I think being surrounded by people is what makes this experience so memorable. But lucky for you, you no longer have to put up with all the rules of the dorm.
SMU needs to build more dorms, dorms that are like apartments so you can have some privacy, but still be on campus. We have all these sports facilities; why not build housing that you can afford and that will allow you to be part of the SMU community. I'm glad all you bloggers on this topic see the value of living on campus. I did it for 4 years, and I feel so close to my school, CWRU, because it really was my home for four years.
