m sure everyone has heard warnings about the "freshman 15". And I believe it is true that many college students gain 15 pounds in their first year of school. I know I have gained at least 7 pounds.
Before college the one thing I refused to do was to gain weight. I didn't think I would have a problem because I always had a fast metabolism. I ate what ever I wanted and never gained weight. But when I think back it was because I was eating my mom’s healthy home cooked meals for most of the week and I was working out at cheer practice 4 times a week.
One reason why college students gain weight is because the cafeteria. We are on our own and are free to eat what we want, when we want it. We can eat pizza, French fries, and ice cream every day of the week if we wanted to. I know for most students they come from families who cook dinners for them most nights of the week. Our parents don't make French fries or pizza for us every night, what they cook for us is healthy. Usually when we order pizza at home it is a treat. Or when we get French fries at McDonalds it's a treat. When we come to Umfree Lee we can eat whatever we want because we are allowed to.
The reason why I gained weight is mainly because of the cafeteria. I know its not from alcohol because I don't drink that much. First semester when I came to Umfree Lee I literally ate what ever I wanted. Burgers, fries, pizza, pasta, fried chicken etc. IT WAS SO GOOD, but not so healthy. If kids are free to eat whatever they want of course they are going to gain weight!
These unhealthy food choices we make doesn't give us the balance of nutrients we need. The weight gain could really affect our health (high cholesterol or high blood pressure).
It’s really not our fault that college students gain weight. I think it is mainly the cafeteria’s fault. Because they serve French fries and pizza every day of the week we are free to eat it every day of the week. I think Umfree Lee should have these unhealthy foods maybe only 3 times a week. The other days I think it should be all healthy. This way kids can control their weight better. Looking back I totally regret eating all that junk food, going to Umfree Lee now totally disgusts me!

I think I'm going to have to diasgree with you to a pretty heavy extent. I too ate too much pizza and too many fries first semester, and as a result, gained almost 8 pounds. Self-control, or a lack thereof, was the reason I gained weight. It was not because I went to Umphree Lee. If you'll notice, the three things that are at RFoC every day are the pizza/fries, the salad bar, and the sandwich station. The pasta and homecooked stations change but the other things are the exact same every day. Two of those choices are much healthier than the third. If we could just learn to control how much we eat and CHOOSE the salad over the pizza on a more regular basis, weight wouldn't be an issue. The first two weeks back after Christmas break, I decided to get a salad or chicken sandwich at Mac's for all my meals. I also started working out on a regular basis and the weight I had gained was immediately lost. Moral of the story- the cafeteria may not be helping but they certainly aren't the cause. Also, in the DC today they had an article on how Umphree will be offering an organic station for the last week and a half of school, you should check that out as well.
I agree and disagree blaming the cafe foe weight gain. Some kids can eat whatever they want and others can't. The cafe cannot stop serving a certain food because some people are gaining weight. It is really hard to stay away from those bad foods but we have to try to stay discipline. Im not sure if you still work out 4 times a week like in high school but that may factor into it to. They can't take away unhealthy foods because many like that, however they can add more healthy options to choose from.
First of all, hey girl, you are not fat; if you gained 7 pounds, I'm sure you were really thin before. Now this is an interesting discussion because in the public schools in grades K-12, the cafeterias have been partly responsible for the epidemic of obesity in children. The serve pizza, french fries, toasted cheese sandwiches--all kinds of fat-laden food, and the kids not only don't have much choice but they are not mature enough to use self-discipline and choose the salads if their moms are not there to choose for them. But in college, the picture is slightly different. I have only eaten once in Humphrey Lee, but I saw salads and fruits, and chicken. I agree that there were plenty of starchy items too, and they could have more tasty things that are healthy. I wouldn't want to eat there everyday.
